Sedation

Our aim here at Glenfield Dental is to provide all of our patients with the best available treatment in a calm, friendly and relaxing setting. We understand that many patients may feel nervous or anxious about visiting us, and we are here to help those suffering from dental phobia.  Glenfield Dental have been providing IV sedation for well over 10 years with a highly experienced qualified team.

About Sedation

During IV sedation we will administer a sedative agent whilst monitoring your heart rate and blood pressure. As the sedative begins to take effect, you will start to feel drowsy and relaxed. However, despite being unable to feel any discomfort during treatment, you will remain conscious and in control and can easily communicate with the dentist if you feel the need to as you remain in a completely relaxed state. The sedative agent helps you relax and causes mild temporary amnesia.

You will be under sedation for as long as the treatment procedure takes. As soon as the sedative agent is stopped you will start to feel more alert. You will be required to bring a friend or family member to drive you home, and you should rest for the remainder of the day. We strongly advise patients who have been under sedation not to drive, drink alcohol or operate machinery for at least 24 hours after leaving the practice.

Benefits of Sedation

  • Treatment is carried out safely and comfortably and you will feel completely relaxed throughout the procedure
  • As well as nervous patients, sedation is perfect for those with a sensitive gag reflex as it enables the throat to relax
  • It avoids the need to attend the hospital for general anesthesia for some treatments, speeding up recovery time and reduces clinical risks.
